1. PLAZA MAYOR

PLAZA MAYOR
The city where we build this Plaza Mayor has got a specific surname, is a University City, the Autonoma University of Madrid. The UAM has grown around a central space of circulation and interaction, a green boulevard which its been converted into the central spine of the university. In one of the boulevard extremes the regional train station is located which connects us to La Puerta del Sol and in the other one, la Plaza Mayor is situated.
La Plaza Mayor is the new services nucleus of the university, which has to manifest his symbolic and representative character serving as a reference into the campus structure
The city where we build this Plaza Mayor has got a specific surname, is a University City: the Autonoma University of Madrid. Users are young and adults, students and teachers, with their knowledge transmission.
The University has grown around a meeting and circulation central space, characterized by a green boulevard that has become in the central structure of the University. Next to that, the Science University, the Rectorate and the recent commuter Station which connects us with the City Center: Puerta del Sol.
At the far end of boulevard, the Plaza Mayor closes principal space, Living of University.
The Plaza Mayor must also be the new services core of the University, the lateral closing of the boulevard and the natural continuity with the rest of the Campus. And, while, should express its symbolic nature and representative, serving as a reference into the structure of the Campus

HOW TO BUILD A PLAZA?
Only by the means of scale, the density and the fluency can merge a space able to host the character variety of the contemporary individual. The target is to build an undetermined space , flexible and able to attract the university user both for the preprogrammed and non-planned use.
The scale doesn't permit to limit a public space, defined by legible edges.
The density is the mean to define the borders: the solids build and define the access.
The fluency allows a free and flexible movement , without a predetermined destination.
We like to work without barriers, with invitation to use and enjoy, without opening and closing hours., superposing the public space and the private space; The human surrounding are usually classified and regulated for the barriers of property and privacy, and its first of all in this aspect that we have to work as architects

Inferior Continuity
7 access bridges brig us to the interior of Plaza Mayor. Once inside its identified with the city: continuous, unique, assisted for energy services which permit the celebration of events a meetings with a very distinct indole. Above them are the balconies of the boulevard which defoliate in two superposed platforms with non-coincident edges. Its both a plaza and an arcade, creating from a simple form, a recognized and appraised space.
Superior Continuity
The roof is part of the 800 meters long promenade which connects us to the train station. Its an edge and an oriel, elevated more than 12 meters above the surrounding ground. Its also geometrically a cutoff, a horseshoe more than 85 meters long which transmits the sensation of arrival and appeal …. From it is possible to see the nearby sierra, so near but some times hidden from all the public space of the campus.
Perceptive Continuity
Our surroundings build now our rooftop: some crosiers illuminate it synchronized to the solar clock, some leds with mild white lights show us the edge, artificial lawn, rolls of rubber and Epdm designed with different colors, photovoltaic posts and drink kiosks.
Built with the same materials, some times natural. but inviting to his use till the end of the summer, just the beginning of the new semester.
